Wet Wheels Boat trip (June 2025)
Saturday the 21st of June saw our first ever Bright Futures community day. The day involved a trip out on the ‘Wet Wheels’ Boat in Torquay. This is a fully accessible boat that provides trips around the bay to people with additional needs. Not only is the boat accessible to all, but people can also choose to drive the boat, which is a fantastic opportunity as most of the clients using Wet Wheels have never been on a boat, let alone driven one!
We attended with 6 young people from the bright futures project, as well as their families. Taking a trip out and around thatchers rock, learning loads about Torbay’s history and our coastline along the way. Before turning around and being driven back to the harbour by the young people, in a straight(ish) line, featuring some donuts along the way!
The boat has a capacity of 10 people including 3 wheelchairs, so whilst we where cruising around the bay, the rest of the families went for a coffee all together with our director Martyn and client Luke. This presented a really nice opportunity for parents and siblings to meet each other outside of the gym environment. Once we finished the hour trip and where safely parked in the harbour by our very own Corey! We headed across to meet the rest of gang for some much-needed lunch!
Seeing all the young people and their families come together over lunch really made the day for me as a lot of them haven’t met each other before and watching them get on so well topped off what was a great morning.
Our next trip will be in September/October at the Calvert Trust, an outdoor centre in North Devon, Leading the way in ensuring outdoor activities are accessible for all.
Thanks again to all the companies who sponsor and support this project, without your backing this would not be possible.
